Stephen Coonts
Naval aviator, combat veteran, bestselling novelist
Born in 1946, Coonts joined the U.S. Navy after college and earned his pilot wings in 1969 at Pensacola. He flew the carrier-based A-6 Intruder with attack squadron VA-196 and completed two combat cruises aboard the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise in 1972. During the Vietnam conflict he accumulated 1,600 flight hours and 305 carrier landings, including 105 at night. His decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross.
